Desperate, ailing greyhound in streets of Madrid

Below are the DIRECT words of a Spanish woman who cares for animals. She briefly describes how an abandoned galga (pictures are below) was found on the streets of Madrid. The galga was in terrible shape — horrible condition — yet many people, including the police, did absolutely NOTHING about it:
“Last Friday ,we rescued this poor galga (obviously used for breeding) in Madrid. It ,is terrible because she was in the street, with too much cold and her body is very, very bad. The people see her and the policeman do nothing ,only two young women call us. If we did not rescue this poor galga, she would die in the street in Madrid city” — Cristina

Below are the DIRECT words of a Spaniard who rescued a galgo in great pain. The dog had been abandoned to die a slow, miserable, torturous death. A private individual, not the police or government or any municipal organization, rescued the dog. -T. Smith
Te mando las fotos de un galgo que recogieron ayer Evagrio y otros compañeros cerca de Albacete. El tiene una fractura abierta de la pata trasera derecha, como puedes ver en las fotos, el tiene también una fuerte contusion con posibilidad de algo de tendon en la otra pata, aunque la apoya, y otras pequeñas heridas, el esta muy delgado, el es un macho jóven.
Estaba en una hondonada dejandose morir, pues me imagino el tremendo dolor que estaba pasando, lo hemos dejado en la clinica, despues de curarle las heridas, ponerle antibioticos y antiflamatorios, pues tenia 40 de fiebre, por infección, también se le ha puesto morfina para el dolor y el pobre ha dado un suspiro de tranquilidad que por poco nos hace llorar. Como nos dijiste que te avisaramos en casos de este tipo, te escribo para ver si tienes posibilidades de ayudarle.

Below are the DIRECT words of a Spaniard in the town of Cuenca, Spain.
She briefly describes how an abandoned greyhound (galga) with a mutilated ear and tail lives in the streets and begs for food because it is starving to death. Neighbours are threatening to take the poor animal to the dog pound (known as ‘killing stations’ in Spain) where it will be killed.
She also says that in her town and other inland towns of Spain, animals are of little or no consequence.
Tenemos una galga con las orejas mutiladas y el rabo, está en la calle y los vecinos amenazan con llevarla a la perrera porque se les mete en un restaurante buscando comida.
Por otro lado el cachorrito cruce de galgo de dos meses,todo blanquito está en la protectora,pero desde aqui pido un SOS porque en la protectora nos los roban y no tenemos instalaciones y porque por aqui nadie adopta galgos a no ser para fines cazadores y no tenemos oportunidad de sacarlos de aqui.
Estoy hablando de Cuenca y de pueblos de la España más profunda, donde los animales siguen siendo, animales sin ningún reconocimiento.
Si alguién nos puede echar una mano acogiéndolos o buscandoles casa en el extranjero,donde sabemos que están bastante más reconocidos se lo agradeceríamos mucho.

Please read the words below of a Spaniard who knows and sees firsthand how the greyhounds in Spain live and die horrifically. The hanging of greyhounds is so prevalent in one region of Spain, that the locals say “the trees grow greyhounds”.

For not killing them
Yesterday, a person brought two greyhounds to our association– two males of 2 and 4 years. When asked the reason of the abandonment she simply responded, “for not killing them. They don’t run well”, and she even commented that people of in Albacete town told her the problem (of getting rid of the greyhounds) could easily be solved “with a gun shot or with rope”. But she decided to spare their lives and deal with the inconvenience of coming to Albacete. These words give us an idea of the tortuous fate of hundreds of greyhounds in Spain every year.
Between December of 2004 and February of 2005 our association has picked up 74 greyhounds, just in the Albacete capital and its proximities. Other greyhounds wander (and get killed) on highways or roads with a horrible end. How many more will be run over, hung or shot to death? We suppose that it will be many, many more. This massive abandonment, in these days, and mainly of greyhounds and other hunting dogs takes place every year. This winter has been the worst in the recent years. The obligatory installation of the microchip in Castille La Mancha has encouraged many of the owners who are not willing to fulfil this law, since he would allow to know the person’s name that carries out the abandonment, to the massive abandonment of the animals.
This situation that we live in Albacete repeats in whole Castille la Mancha, to such an extent that, according to a colleague in the area of Ciudad Real words “in my town, the trees grow greyhounds.”
We continue being a European country of the Third World in this matter.
The opinion that is picked up in the different forums of Internet with respect to the situation of the dogs in Spain offers a disgraceful perspective of our country among the rest of the European countries.
How much longer will the authorities continue to allow these acts with impunity ? Laws exist both much at national level and at autonomous level that prohíbit the abandonment, the putting to death (in these cases the word carries with it a heavy price) and other acts of cruelty with greyhounds, hunting dogs, fighting dogs (there are also these in Spain and as men gamble for money and machismo) and rest of dogs in general.
In spite of the coming into effect in August of 2004 of the law that makes obligatory the microchip in Castilla La Mancha (to introduce this, we were among the last community of Spain), the Seprona with the patrol cars, and the local Police still don’t have the necessary chip readers to apply this law.
Those of us who love the animals, we don’t change our feelings for them when they can’t run or when they become old. We hope that the mentality of the coming generations can change this situation and will bring us a little nearer the way that other European countries behave towards animals, so that we can cease to be the one Western reserve of cruelty with our animals.

Por no matarlos
Ayer, una persona trajo dos galgos a nuestro albergue, dos machos de 2 y 4 años, al preguntarle el motivo del abandono simplemente respondió, “por no matarlos, es que no corren bien”, e incluso comentó que personas del pueblo le dijeron que “para que se tomaba la molestia de venir hasta Albacete, con un tiro o una soga se solucionaba”. Estas palabras nos dan una idea del destino que sufren cientos de galgos en España todos los años.
Entre diciembre de 2004 y febrero de 2005 nuestra asociación ha recogido 74 galgos, solamente en Albacete capital y pedanías, otros tantos andarán vagando por carreteras o caminos con un final horrible, cuántos habrán sido atropellados, colgados o muertos de un tiro, suponemos que muchos más. Este abandono masivo, en estas fechas, y sobre todo de galgos y otros perros de caza se produce todos los años, este invierno ha sido el peor de los últimos años, la implantación obligatoria del microchip en Castilla-la Mancha ha animado a muchos de los propietarios, que no están dispuestos a cumplir esta ley, ya que permitiría conocer el nombre de la persona que realiza el abandono, al abandono masivo de los animales.
Esta situación que vivimos en Albacete se repite en toda Castilla-la Mancha, hasta tal punto que, según palabras de una compañera de la zona de Ciudad Real “en mi pueblo, los árboles dan galgos”.
Seguimos siendo el país tercermundista de Europa en esta materia. La opinión que se puede recoger en los distintos foros de Internet referente a la situación de los perros en España ofrece una lamentable perspectiva de nuestro país en el resto de los países europeos.
¿Hasta cuando las autoridades van a seguir permitiendo la impunidad de estos actos? Existen leyes tanto a nivel nacional como autonómico que prohíben los abandonos, los sacrificios (en estos casos la palabra queda un poco ligth) y demás actos de crueldad con galgos, perros de caza, perros de pelea (también las hay en España y mueven machísimo dinero en las apuestas) y resto de perros en general.
A pesar de la entrada en vigor en Agosto de 2004 de la ley que hace obligatorio el microchip en Castilla-la Mancha (en esto también hemos sido de las últimas comunidades de España), todavía los miembros de las patrullas del Seprona y Policía local no cuentan con los lectores necesarios para aplicar esta ley.
Los que amamos los animales por si mismos, no como herramienta que se cambia cuando ya no vale o envejece, esperamos que, la mentalidad de las generaciones venideras pueda cambiar esta situación y, nos acerque un poco más al modo en que otros países europeos se trata a los animales, para que podamos dejar de ser la reserva de crueldad de occidente con los nuestros.
