Dear Friends, December 2024
This year seems to have flown by, and I cannot believe we will soon be coming to the end of another year at GIN HQ. Putting this bulletin together has given me the opportunity to look back over the year at our work.
Thanks to the very generous and kind donations from our supporters, donors, and followers we have been able to continue to offer funding (veterinary/boarding/transport) enabling many galgos and greyhounds to be rescued, transported and adopted in the UK and Europe.
We continue to offer funding for specific projects at the shelters and recently paid for some new awnings to replace the old torn ones that were at the Companero Fiel shelter in Cordoba. Carmen, who runs the shelter, was very thankful as these provide much needed shade for the dogs in the hot weather.
At GIN, one of our key focuses is supporting the shelters in delivering meaningful educational experiences for schools and youth organisations. We aim to develop children’s understanding, encourage empathy, and raise awareness about galgos and animal welfare through engaging resources, hands-on activities, and thoughtful take-home gifts.
This summer, we have been hard at work creating new materials to help shelters engage visiting children in fun and educational ways. One of our newest creations is a Design a Rehoming Shelter activity. Children can decorate their own shelter using a specially designed box (which can hold four galgo toy figures) and a tabletop poster.
On one side of the poster are all the essential rooms needed in a rescue shelter, while the other side features kennels for the dogs. The outside areas depicted include a car park, exercise zones, outdoor pens, a dog wash area, and even a sensory garden. Accompanying the activity is a guide that supports language learning, role-play, arts and crafts and teaches children about the daily workings of rescue shelters.
We are excited to announce that the new Galgo Activity Booklet is going to print now and is packed with over twenty galgo-themed activities, it will serve as a fantastic take-home item for children after their shelter visit, reinforcing what they have learned in a fun and inter-active way. GIN supports rescue shelters by funding education classrooms and equipment, transportation for school visits, and the provision of an education programme through a dedicated website. https://education.greyhoundsinneed.co.uk/ All our education materials are free to download
We wish you, your families, and your dogs a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,Tracey and all at GIN
