April 2015 - Message from Sue North

After nearly 15 years Penny and I (and dear Snoopy) have decided to ‘retire’ from the Greyhounds in Need shop at the end of April. My family, friends, volunteers and supporters have all helped to make the Bournemouth shop such a success enabling us to raise much needed funds for the galgos and greyhounds.

We have met some wonderful people over the years, gained a deep insight into the world of greyhound racing and campaigned for better conditions for the dogs during their lifetime. We have also been fortunate in finding lovely homes for many greyhounds, galgos and lurchers….and a couple of cats!

Thankfully more and more people are becoming aware of what wonderful pets greyhounds and galgos make and have become smitten by their gentle and laid-back temperament. They are truly very special dogs and once they are in your hearts you will always have one by your side.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteers who have helped us in the shop and with fundraising, Peter and Val who organise monthly dog walks (and Christmas lunches), kind supporters who sometimes travel many miles with their donations, sponsors of our galgos, dog coat makers and many others whose help and generosity has been invaluable.

I wish our new Manager, Alena, good luck, happiness and success with running the shop. Volunteers are always needed so please offer a little of your time; give Alena a ring soon on 01202 513000.

Onto pastures new……… Sue

October 2014This year has been even more challenging than ever. With the opening of numerous “Cash 4 Clothes” shops, donations of clothing to us have been dramatically reduced. However, sales of other items both in the shop and over the internet have increased and we are now generally receiving donations of better quality goods. We have been delighted to provide wedding outfits for several brides and their mothers and have supplied shabby-chic china and candles for receptions.

Our supporter Carol Peake very kindly organised successful fundraising stalls at Poole and Winton Carnivals this summer. Luckily, we seem to have good weather here in the south and the sun shone on both days.

At the beginning of July we closed for a week for a much needed refurbishment. Several volunteers and their partners and Penny and I repainted the interior of the shop, fitted new shelving and re-carpeted throughout. It was a tremendous effort by all involved but it made a pleasant change from the day-to-day running of the shop. Everything now looks much fresher and more attractive.

We were recently invited by Ellen Kent of Opera and Ballet International to support her forthcoming production of Rigoletto in Bournemouth by giving two of our rescued hounds, Ernie and Tracy, the opportunity to make their stage debut. Ellen has long been a campaigner for animal welfare, like her mother who ran an animal sanctuary in Spain for many years. Needless to say we are all extremely excited about the event which should prove quite breathtaking. The production also features a magnificent golden eagle with a 5 foot wingspan, Nabucco, a creature which has been part of an on-going programme to re-introduce golden eagles back into the wild in Scotland where they had been hunted almost to extinction. Ellen very kindly donated several Rigoletto tickets to us which we will be auctioning through the shop and there will also be a collection after the show for Greyhounds in Need.

We are grateful to Val and Peter Crawley for co-ordinating our monthly greyhound walks (lurchers and whippets welcome). The October walk is on Sunday 5 at Upton Country Park (meet in the car park at 10.45am), followed by the November walk on Sunday 2 at Hengistbury Head (meeting at the Hiker Café at 10.45am).

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all our volunteers who have helped with the refurbishment of the shop and fundraising events this summer and others who have given their time on a regular basis to help with the running of the shop.

Sue

Please continue to send us your used British and foreign stamps as these are sorted and sold in special packs on the internet. Also if you have any unwanted silver or gold jewellery—even if broken, please send this along to the shop as funds can be raised from these items.

Bournemouth Shop News - October 2013

Our shop continues to thrive and donations are still coming in thick and fast. I don’t think there will ever be a time when we will run out of stock! Much needed funds are still being raised by the sale of used postage stamps sent to us by our supporters. These are packaged and sold on the internet; please keep them coming! We also still welcome any unwanted jewellery – broken gold/silver items also appreciated.

Many thanks to Jo and family who kindly organised a collection with their friends and greyhounds at the Bikers Night on Poole Quay recently and collected donations of £50. If you would like to organise a fund-raising event for GIN in the Bournemouth area such as a store collection (Asda, Castlepoint is a good venue!), stall at an autumn/Christmas fair or any other event, we have lots of lovely stock at the shop you are welcome to use.

Our monthly walking group celebrated their tenth anniversary on September 1st with a walk in Upton Country Park followed by a picnic in the lovely grounds. A big thank you to Mollie and Keith, Val and Peter who have organised the walks over the past ten years.

If you are in the Bournemouth/Christchurch area on the first Sunday of the month then please join us with your greyhound/lurcher/whippet for a friendly walk. We usually meet at Upton Country Park but feel free to give me a ring on 01202 513000 to check the venue. Sue

The GIN Dorset monthly walks group celebrated their Tenth Year with an anniversary walk and picnic at Upton Country Park in Poole on a lovely sunny day and everyone had a lovely time including long time supporter Shirley who celebrated her birthday and was presented with a card and birthday cake accompanied by a very tunefully sung version of "Happy Birthday" ! Mollie and Keith who used to run the walks and Peter and Val who now run them were both touched by a presentation of a thank you card and framed print of their walk leading hounds.

These walks are held on the first Sunday of the month at 11.00am at Upton Country Park, Upton , Poole, Dorset, BH17 7BJ. Facilities include free parking, toilets and cafe. http://www.uptoncountrypark.com

A special thank you to Amanda for sending in the lovely poem.

Bournemouth Shop News - October 2012

The first few months of this year have been very challenging for our Bournemouth shop. Although donations of goods have been flooding in sales are down on previous years, despite the notion that more and more people are buying second-hand clothes and other items. However, our late summer has now improved our takings together with extended opening hours.

As we continue to receive plenty of good donations we would still like to hear from supporters interested in having a stall at a Car Boot Sale or other local event for us. We always have plenty of interesting, good quality items which have not sold in the shop and would be ideal for this purpose. Alternatively, if you would like to organise a collection at a local store then I would be happy to help with paperwork, etc. (Please ring me at the shop on 01202 513000.)

Some of you may know I adopted a rescued saluki lurcher called Snoopy a couple of years ago. I recently came across an interesting article which seems to connect hounds with my family even when I was a child. My father’s sister and family who were farm workers lived in a house called Dragon Cottage in a small hamlet called Bisterne (Hampshire) which is not far from Bournemouth. Over the front door is carved a dragon in commemoration of Sir Maurice Berkeley and his two trusty hounds who killed a devouring dragon in 1459. Apparently the dragon “did much mischief upon man and cattel.” Needless to say I am now researching this interesting story!

Finally, please continue to donate your unwanted gold and silver jewellery (even if broken). It is surprising just how much cash a few items can raise to help the greyhounds and galgos. Sue

More details on events booked so far can be found here

Bournemouth Shop News - Oct 2011

The shop has been very busy this summer. We are constantly surprised and very pleased with the amount of goods donated – it certainly keeps us all busy and you never know what you might find!

We had a stall again this year at the Winton Carnival which raised over £400 and we were fortunate for the third year running to have a lovely sunny day for this event. I am very grateful to our volunteers who kindly gave up their time to make the day so successful. We also carried out Street Collections in Fordingbridge, Ringwood and Dorchester this summer although we were a little short of helpers.

Supermarket collections have become increasingly popular, are easy to arrange and are well supported by the public. Would you be interested in organising one at your local supermarket with a few friends/relatives and your dogs? I would be happy to offer any help or advice if needed.

Please keep sending in your used postage stamps, any silver and gold jewellery (even if broken), used ink cartridges and mobile phones. These all help to bring in vital funds for Greyhounds in Need.

Let’s hope there are more sunny days to come before winter sets in; happy fundraising.

Sue

Great British Greyhound Walk Dorset 2010

Bournemouth Shop News - Apr 2011

We were lucky to be chosen by our local Waitrose as one of their charities for the month of February and Greyhounds in Need will be receiving a cheque for £319 in the next few weeks.

Please keep sending us British and foreign stamps; we have made several hundred pounds for GIN over the last few months from sorting and selling these in special packs on the internet.

Many thanks to our supporters who have sent in their unwanted jewellery; some items have been really exquisite and most interesting.

If you can come along and help at any of our events we would be pleased to hear from you. Don’t forget the Great British Greyhound Walk on 26th June.

Sue

The Celebration Fair in June, marking 10 years of successful fundraising at the GIN shop in Bournemouth , went very well. Sue and Penny have also been busy organising collections locally. They always need more helpers so please give Sue a ring on 01202 513000 if you can help in any way.

If you have any used postage stamps please send them to the shop  – Penny and Aileen sort these out and raise funds for GIN. Sue would also be pleased to receive any unwanted jewellery (including broken gold items). Recently she and Penny were able to raise over £200 from items donated to the shop.

A special thank you here to Marion and her son who regularly send parcels to us in Wraysbury with items we can sell at our events or at the shops.   We rarely have a day without a parcel being delivered to us in Wraysbury and Sue also receives coats from supporters for the greyhounds and   galgos—some photos here, taken by Saskia, showing the galgos at the Villamartin refuge modelling coats Sue sent last month.

Simon (and Ace!)

Salisbury to Winchester Great Clarendon Marathon - 3rd October

“Hello all, My name is Simon. Four months ago Greyhounds in Need helped me rescue my greyhound. Ace. Ace has settled in wonderfully to pet life after being a successful racer himself. I can’t imagine life without him now. Retirement has meant a cosy life on our sofa for Ace, and I’m hoping to raise as much money as possible to help more ex-racers like him, by running in the Great Clarendon Marathon; 26 miles from Salisbury to Winchester .

Please donate as much as you can.

Thank you.

Hi Everyone

This year is a very special one for us in Bournemouth ; we are celebrating 10 years of successful fundraising through the shop and by holding various events, and have found lovely homes for numerous needy dogs along the way. During this time I have met some wonderful people and gained a deep insight into the sinister world of greyhound racing. Nothing could ever have prepared me for this difficult journey !

Thankfully more and more people are becoming aware of what wonderful pets greyhounds and lurchers make. They, too, have been smitten by their gentle and laid back temperament. Greyhounds are truly very special dogs.

A very busy summer is looming ahead with many events already organised including street and store collections, our annual sponsored walk and, the highlight of this year, our 10-year Celebration Fair and BBQ at the Greyhounds in Need Shop, Bournemouth.

We will need lots of help to make these events successful so please let me hear from you very soon!

THE GALGOS/GREYHOUNDS NEED YOUR  SUPPORT !

Regards,

     Sue
